Houston summers can turn an ordinary day outdoors into a medical emergency. Heat illness, severe dehydration, swimming incidents, serious allergic reactions, foodborne illness, burns, and recreation-related injuries can worsen quickly.

At Ascent Emergency Room, we provide 24/7 walk-in emergency care for adults and children at 2280 Holcombe Blvd., across from Hermann Park in Houston’s Room.

If someone is confused, having a seizure, unconscious, struggling to breathe, severely injured, or showing signs of heat stroke or a severe allergic reaction, call 911 immediately. Emergency medical services can assess the situation and determine the safest destination.

When Summer Symptoms Need Emergency Care

Not every headache or episode of fatigue after spending time outdoors requires an ER visit. However, certain symptoms can indicate a serious condition that needs immediate medical evaluation.

Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms such as:

  • Confusion, fainting, seizures, loss of consciousness, or very high body temperature after heat exposure
  • Inability to keep liquids down, very little urination, severe dizziness, or other signs of significant dehydration
  • Breathing problems, persistent coughing, unusual drowsiness, or concerning symptoms after a nonfatal drowning
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat; wheezing; trouble swallowing; faintness; or other signs of a severe allergic reaction
  • Repeated vomiting, bloody diarrhea, severe weakness, or significant dehydration with suspected food poisoning
  • Serious burns, deep cuts, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected fractures, or significant head injuries

For suspected heat stroke, call 911 and begin cooling the person while emergency help is on the way. Move them to a cooler area, remove excess outer clothing, and use cool water or wet cloths when possible.

Emergency Care for Heat Illness and Severe Dehydration

Houston’s heat and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illness, particularly during prolonged outdoor activity.

Heat exhaustion may cause heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, thirst, and reduced urination. Heat stroke is more dangerous and may cause confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, or dangerously elevated body temperature.

At our Houston emergency room, our emergency physicians can evaluate the severity of heat illness or dehydration, assess for complications, and provide acute treatment based on your condition.

When medically appropriate, treatment may include IV fluids for dehydration. Our on-site laboratory capabilities also allow us to perform testing ordered by the emergency physician when necessary to evaluate dehydration and related medical concerns.

Water, Outdoor, and Recreation-Related Emergencies

Summer emergencies involve much more than heat.

A person who experiences a nonfatal drowning should receive prompt medical evaluation because breathing complications or other problems may not always be immediately obvious.

We also evaluate acute summer injuries and medical emergencies including:

  • Severe reactions to insect bites or stings
  • Burns
  • Lacerations and deep cuts
  • Suspected fractures
  • Sprains and serious sports injuries
  • Head injuries and concussions
  • Severe foodborne illness
  • Significant dehydration
  • Heat-related emergencies

When clinically appropriate, our emergency physicians can order on-site X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and laboratory testing to help evaluate acute injuries and illnesses.

Summer Emergencies in Children

Children can also develop serious summer-related conditions from heat exposure, dehydration, swimming incidents, falls, sports activities, and allergic reactions.

We provide emergency evaluation and treatment for children as well as adults, with care based on the child’s symptoms, condition, and clinical urgency.

Parents should seek immediate medical attention when a child develops severe breathing difficulty, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, significant dehydration, serious injuries, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

For life-threatening symptoms, call 911.

Is heat stroke a medical emergency?

Yes. Heat stroke can cause confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, and dangerously elevated body temperature. Call 911 immediately and begin safely cooling the person while emergency help is on the way.

When should I go to the ER for dehydration?

Emergency evaluation may be appropriate when dehydration becomes severe or causes symptoms such as fainting, confusion, very little urination, severe dizziness, significant weakness, or repeated vomiting that prevents you from keeping liquids down.

Can you provide IV fluids for severe dehydration?

Yes. We can provide IV fluids when an emergency physician determines they are medically appropriate. We first evaluate the cause and severity of the dehydration and determine what emergency treatment is needed.

Should someone be evaluated after a nonfatal drowning if they seem okay?

Yes. Prompt medical evaluation is important after a nonfatal drowning because breathing or other complications may not always be obvious immediately. Call 911 for breathing difficulty, unresponsiveness, or other life-threatening symptoms.

Do you treat children with summer emergencies?

Yes. We provide emergency care for both children and adults. Summer emergencies may include severe heat illness, dehydration, swimming incidents, serious allergic reactions, burns, falls, sports injuries, and other acute conditions.

Is Ascent Emergency Room an urgent care center?

No. We are a freestanding emergency medical care facility focused on the evaluation and treatment of acute medical emergencies. We do not operate as an urgent care clinic or provide routine preventive or long-term medical care.
